Understanding GSM: how towel weight affects guest experience and laundry cost

GSM, grams per square metre, is the first figure on every towel specification. It shapes absorbency, drying time and the guest’s first impression together.

What GSM measures

GSM describes the weight of a towel per square metre of fabric. A higher figure means more cotton in the same area, which usually means a denser, more substantial towel. It is a quick and useful way to compare products, and the first number most specifications ask for.

But weight is a result, not a recipe. Two towels of the same GSM can feel and perform very differently depending on the cotton, the yarn, the loop construction and the finishing. GSM tells you where a towel sits in the range; the rest of the specification tells you how it will behave.

Weight and the guest experience

Guests judge a towel in seconds: by its weight in the hand, its softness against the skin and how well it dries. Heavier towels feel generous and luxurious, and they signal a premium stay. Lighter towels feel practical and fresh, and they suit environments where speed matters more than indulgence.

Absorbency is not purely a matter of weight. Loop height, yarn twist and finishing all play a part, and a well-made mid-weight towel can dry better than a poorly constructed heavy one.

Weight and the laundry

Every gram of cotton has to be washed and, more importantly, dried. Heavier towels hold more water, take longer in the dryer and use more energy per cycle. In a high-turnover property that difference repeats every day, across every room, so it is worth weighing carefully against the guest experience you want to create.

Lighter towels move through the laundry faster and are easier to handle, fold and store. That is why business hotels, pool programmes and properties with intensive turnover often choose lighter constructions without compromising on quality.

Finding the right range

Most hotel towels fall between 450 and 700 GSM, and it helps to think of that span in three bands. From 450 to 500 GSM, towels are efficient: quick to dry, light to handle and well suited to business hotels and pool use.

From 550 to 600 GSM sits the balance that many four- and five-star properties choose: a substantial hand, good absorbency and drying times the laundry can manage.

From 650 to 700 GSM are signature towels: dense, often made with long-staple or low-twist yarns, intended for luxury suites and spas where the guest experience justifies the extra laundry effort.

Beyond the number

When comparing towel offers, look past the headline weight. Ask about the cotton and yarn, how the loops are anchored, how borders and hems are finished, and how the towel has been tested in industrial laundering. Ask too how the supplier keeps weight and shade consistent between deliveries, so new stock matches what is already in circulation.

The best way to decide is still the simplest: wash samples in your own laundry and hand them to your housekeeping team. Textimas offers towels across the full range, with jacquard borders, woven logos and custom colours, and we will gladly send samples so you can compare them under your own conditions.
